Claude vs ChatGPT (2026): features, pricing and which to choose

Last verified: Prices and features checked on official pages · how we verify

The short answer

  • ChatGPT is the broader all-in-one app: it creates images, has voice and deep research, and offers a cheaper Go plan below $20.
  • Claude is the stronger pick for long documents and code: Claude Code is included in Pro, with a context window of up to 1M tokens.
  • Both are free to start and cost $20/month for the main plan; heavy users pay $100–$200 for Claude Max or $100–$500 for ChatGPT Pro.

Choose Claude if…

  • You work with long documents, big PDFs or large codebases (up to 1M-token context).
  • You want a coding agent (Claude Code) included in a $20 plan.
  • You prefer annual billing to lower the monthly price.

Choose ChatGPT if…

  • You want image creation, voice and deep research in one app.
  • You want a paid plan under $20 (Go) or unlimited text chats for free.
  • You want the most features on every platform, including scheduled tasks.

Which is better? Winner by use case

  • PricingChatGPT

Same $20 main plan, but ChatGPT adds a $8 Go tier; Claude counters with cheaper annual billing.

  • CodingClaude

Claude Code is included in Pro and the context window reaches 1M tokens; ChatGPT includes Codex, limited on Free and Go.

  • Both handle text ideas well; only ChatGPT can turn ideas into images.

  • StudyingChatGPT

ChatGPT Free offers unlimited text chats and some deep research; Claude Free has rolling limits and no Research.

  • More built-in tools in one app (images, voice, deep research) and the cheapest paid step.

  • Up to 1M-token context and 500 MB files; ChatGPT Free allows only 3 uploads a day.

Claude vs ChatGPT pricing

Both assistants have a free plan and a main paid plan at the same price: Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus each cost $20 a month in the US. The differences are at both ends of the range.

  • Cheaper entry: ChatGPT Go costs $8/mo. It raises Free’s limits on messages, uploads and image creation, but OpenAI’s pricing page states the plan may include ads. Claude has no plan between Free and Pro.
  • Annual billing: Claude Pro drops to $17/month when paid yearly. OpenAI says Go, Plus and Pro are billed monthly only.
  • Heavy use: Claude Max costs $100 (5x Pro usage) or $200 (20x). ChatGPT Pro comes in three tiers at $100, $200 and $500.
  • Teams: Claude Team starts at $25 per seat per month; ChatGPT Business at $25 per user per month (less when billed annually).

If you only want one $20 subscription, price is a wash. If you want to spend less, ChatGPT Go is the only option of the two. Every plan is listed in our AI pricing table, and our guide to ChatGPT Go vs Plus details OpenAI’s cheaper tier.

Claude vs ChatGPT for coding

Both now bundle a coding agent with the chat subscription. Claude Pro includes Claude Code, which shares the same usage pool as chat; Claude’s free plan does not include it. ChatGPT includes Codex on every plan: limited on Free and Go, expanded on Plus, with longer sessions on Pro. Claude’s free plan does run code inside the chat, and ChatGPT runs Python for data analysis.

The documented difference is context. Claude’s pricing page lists a context window of up to 1 million tokens (it varies by model), while ChatGPT Plus lists 54K tokens for its Instant model and 256K for reasoning. More context means more of a codebase or log file fits in one conversation. We give the edge to Claude for larger projects; for occasional scripts, ChatGPT Free’s limited Codex access is the cheaper way to start.

Claude vs ChatGPT for brainstorming

For pure text brainstorming — lists of ideas, outlines, angles for an article — both work well and both keep memory across conversations. ChatGPT has one concrete advantage: it can turn an idea into an image, from a rough logo concept to a slide visual, while Claude’s help center states it does not generate images. ChatGPT’s voice chats also make it easy to think out loud. That is why we pick ChatGPT here.

Claude vs ChatGPT for studying

On a student budget, the free plans matter most. ChatGPT Free offers unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna (subject to abuse guardrails) and limited deep research, but only 3 file uploads per day. Claude Free has usage limits that reset on a rolling five-hour window and no Research mode, but it includes web search, memory and up to 5 Projects to keep course material together.

For lots of quick questions, ChatGPT Free goes further. For working through long readings — a 300-page PDF or a semester of lecture notes — Claude’s large context window and file uploads of up to 500 MB are the better fit once you pay for Pro. Students should also look at Gemini vs ChatGPT, since Google’s free plan includes Deep Research.

Claude vs ChatGPT for everyday use

For day-to-day tasks — emails, recipes, quick explanations, photos of a document to understand — ChatGPT covers more ground in one app: image creation, voice, file analysis, deep research and scheduled tasks on paid plans, on web, desktop, iOS and Android. Claude covers the same daily text tasks well and is also on all those platforms, but without image creation. The $8 Go plan is also the cheapest way to get higher limits.

Long documents and files

This is Claude’s clearest strength on paper: a context window of up to 1 million tokens, file uploads up to 500 MB per file in chat, and Projects that keep reference documents available across conversations. ChatGPT accepts files up to 512 MB, but Free users are limited to 3 uploads per day and projects hold 5 files on Free, 25 on Go and Plus, and 40 on Pro.

Which should you choose?

Pick ChatGPT if you want the widest feature set, image creation, or a plan cheaper than $20. Pick Claude if you write long documents, work with large files, or want a coding agent and a 1M-token context in the same $20 plan. Many people try both free plans first, which costs nothing. Frequently asked questions

Is Claude just better than ChatGPT?

Not across the board. Claude has the edge for long documents and code: its paid plans include Claude Code and a context window of up to 1 million tokens. ChatGPT is broader: it creates images, offers a cheaper $8 Go plan and unlimited text chats on its free plan. The better choice depends on your main task.

What can Claude do that ChatGPT cannot?

Few things are fully exclusive, but the documented differences are real: Claude's context window reaches up to 1 million tokens (ChatGPT's largest is 400K on Pro), Claude Pro can be billed annually at a discount (ChatGPT's individual plans are monthly only), and Pro adds Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365. ChatGPT, in turn, creates images; Claude does not.

Why are people moving from ChatGPT to Claude?

There are no official figures on how many users switch. The reasons usually given match documented plan features: Claude Code is included in the $20 Pro plan, the context window reaches 1 million tokens for long documents and codebases, and Projects and memory are available even on the free plan. Test both free plans on your own tasks before switching.

Why is everyone leaving ChatGPT?

Everyone isn't, and there is no official data showing a mass exodus. The question usually reflects frustration with limits, ads or price: OpenAI's pricing page says the $8 Go plan may include ads, Free users get 3 file uploads per day, and individual plans have no annual billing. If one of those is your issue, Claude or another alternative may fit better.
