Last verified: Prices and features checked on official pages · how we verify

The short answer

  • Go ($8/mo) lifts Free’s limits on messages, uploads and image creation — enough for regular personal use.
  • Plus ($20/mo) adds GPT-6 reasoning, expanded deep research, memory and Codex: the plan for work, study and code.
  • Pro (from $100/mo) is for people who hit Plus limits every day. Go may include ads; Plus and Pro do not say so.

What is better, ChatGPT Plus or ChatGPT Go?

ChatGPT Plus is the more capable plan: it adds advanced reasoning models with GPT-6, expanded deep research, memory and Codex, and ChatGPT Work on web and mobile. Go costs $8 instead of $20 and raises Free's limits on messages, uploads and image creation, but its Think mode uses GPT-5.6 Luna only and the plan may include ads.

Usage limits

OpenAI does not publish fixed message counts for these plans. Its pricing page describes them in steps: Free has unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna (subject to abuse guardrails) but limited messages with uploads and tools; Go has “more messages with tools”; Plus has “expanded” messages and uploads; Pro lets you pick one of three usage tiers. In practice, Go fixes the Free plan’s tightest limits, and Plus is the step that adds capacity for heavier reasoning, research and coding work.

Upload limit

The Free plan allows 3 file uploads per day. Go and Plus raise this (“more uploads” and “expanded uploads”), and every plan accepts files up to 512 MB each, according to OpenAI’s file uploads FAQ. Projects hold up to 5 files on Free, 25 on Go and Plus, and 40 on Pro. If you upload a lot of PDFs or spreadsheets every day, Plus is the safer choice.

Memory and context

Free has limited memory and context (27K tokens for GPT Instant). Go has “longer memory” and the same context as Plus: 54K tokens for Instant and 256K for reasoning. Plus adds “expanded memory and context”. Pro goes to 128K for Instant and 400K for reasoning. For long conversations, Go is already a big step up from Free.

What are the limitations of ChatGPT Go?

According to OpenAI, Go's Think mode uses GPT-5.6 Luna, with no GPT-5.6 Sol and no legacy models. Codex and ChatGPT Work are limited, Work only on the desktop app. The plan may include ads, it is billed monthly only, and OpenAI's help article says voice has the same limits as Free. Projects hold up to 25 files.

Is the ChatGPT Go version worth it?

Go is worth it if ChatGPT Free's limits are your only problem: you hit the cap on uploads (3 per day on Free) or image creation, but you do not need advanced reasoning models, expanded Codex or deep research. If you code, analyze many files or use ChatGPT for work every day, Plus is usually the better value.

Go vs Plus for students

For homework help and quick explanations, Go at $8 a month is enough for most students, and its higher upload limit means you can send photos of exercises and course PDFs without hitting Free’s daily cap. Plus becomes worth it for long research papers (expanded deep research), coding assignments (expanded Codex) or theses that need more memory. Compare with Gemini, whose free plan includes Deep Research.

Go vs Plus for writing

Both plans include projects and custom GPTs, which help keep a consistent style. Plus adds expanded memory and the advanced reasoning models, useful for long documents and structured editing. For emails, posts and short drafts, Go’s unlimited everyday chats are usually sufficient.

ChatGPT Pro vs Plus

Pro has three tiers: $100/mo, $200/mo and $500/mo (the only one with Ultrafast responses). Compared with Plus, it adds Pro reasoning with GPT-6 Astra, unlimited image creation, maximum deep research and context, longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, and Dot, an always-on agent. OpenAI changed the Pro 200 allowance for new subscribers in October 2026, so check the current limits before you subscribe. Read more in Is ChatGPT Plus worth it?, which includes a plan calculator.

Which AI plan is better for me, ChatGPT Go or Google AI Plus?

Google AI Plus costs $4.99 a month versus $8 for ChatGPT Go. Plus doubles Gemini's free limits and adds video generation, a 128K-token context window and 400 GB of Google storage. Go gives more ChatGPT messages, uploads and image creation with a 54K-token context, but may include ads. Choose the assistant you already prefer.

ChatGPT Pro vs Plus: is Pro worth the upgrade?

Pro starts at $100 a month (tiers at $200 and $500) versus $20 for Plus. It adds Pro reasoning with GPT-6 Astra, unlimited image creation, maximum deep research, a 128K Instant and 400K reasoning context, and longer Codex sessions. It only pays off if you regularly hit Plus limits.
